Who we are
The Dayton Street Opportunity Center is an economic and community development “think tank” – a catalyst designed to narrow the opportunity gap for low income families through collective impact strategies, community organizing and direct services.
Why we exist
Children lack the crucial resources and opportunities – inside and outside of schools – that they need if they are to reach their potential in college, career and citizenship.
Poverty is the biggest obstacle to opportunity for children and youth living in the Denver Metro Area. Between 2000 and 2010, the number of children living in poverty in Arapahoe County increased by 156 percent, the largest rate of increase among Colorado counties.
The opportunity gap disproportionately impacts children living in low-income communities. The demographic inequalities that students living in North Aurora, Montebello, and Green Valley Ranch face in comparison to their white and middle class peers put them at a disadvantage before they even enter school. When combined with health and educational disparities, students living in poverty have to overcome more challenges to have an equal chance at life’s opportunities.
